Get Closer, Get Curious and Discover Australia's Remarkable Wildlife

Byron Bay Wildlife Sanctuary gives families the opportunity to get closer to Australian wildlife while discovering more about the animals, habitats and conservation stories behind what they see.

Located at Knockrow between Byron Bay and Ballina, the Sanctuary combines wildlife encounters, education and nature-based activities within an accessible family day out.

A daily program of keeper talks and wildlife presentations helps bring the experience to life. Visitors can learn more about reptiles, watch free-flight bird presentations and hear from the keeper team about animal behaviour, natural habitats and some of the conservation challenges facing Australian wildlife.

For children, it's an opportunity to turn curiosity into learning. Seeing an animal up close, asking a keeper a question or discovering something unexpected can create a very different connection from simply reading about wildlife in a book or seeing it on a screen.

There's plenty of room to make a longer day of the visit too. Nature-based activities and family-friendly facilities complement the wildlife program, while the onsite café provides somewhere to stop and refuel and the retail store offers another place to explore before heading home.

Importantly, conservation isn't simply part of the visitor messaging. Byron Bay Wildlife Sanctuary is a registered Australian charity with DGR status, with wildlife care, conservation and education forming central parts of its purpose.

Whether you're introducing little ones to Australian animals, nurturing a future wildlife keeper or looking for an educational family activity between Byron Bay and Ballina, the Sanctuary offers plenty of reasons to get curious about the wildlife that shares this remarkable part of Australia.
