BUILT BY HAND, HELD BY HEART

A sanctuary shaped by land, time and devotion, BlueGreen stands at the forefront of Australia’s luxury wellness landscape. As our cover story this season, we step into the heart of a retreat space built by hand and held with intention.

Set across five acres of regenerative land in the Byron Bay hinterland, framed by the ancient presence of Wollumbin and the vast Pacific Ocean, BlueGreen Sanctuary stands as one of Australia’s leading destinations for transformation, healing and conscious living. Over more than two decades, this retreat space has been shaped by the hands, instincts and quiet devotion of its owners, Simon and Dolores Kilpin. What began as a modest Airbnb in 2003 has evolved into a world class haven for transformational wellness — a sanctuary where people arrive to restore, reconnect and remember themselves.
BlueGreen’s story begins with the land itself. When Simon and Dolores first stepped onto the property, it was a flower farm with good bones and a pull they couldn’t quite explain. Over the years, they followed that pull without a rigid plan, building spaces that felt warm, soulful and grounded. Much of what stands today was crafted by hand, shaped by feeling rather than trend.
As the sanctuary grew, so did its purpose. Guests began arriving for more than a holiday. Facilitators saw the potential for something deeper: a place spacious enough to hold groups, intimate enough to feel personal, and surrounded by nature in a way that softens people the moment they cross the timber bridge. Retreats followed, then more retreats, until BlueGreen became known as a venue where transformation wasn’t just possible, but inevitable. Today, the Sanctuary hosts over 50 retreats each year, welcoming facilitators, healers, teachers and wellness leaders from around the world.

Despite its global reputation, BlueGreen has remained grounded. The team — a small, dedicated group led by Retreat Director and Property Manager Adam West — tends to the land and the spaces with a sense of reverence. Their philosophy is simple: meaningful experiences come from meaningful relationships. With the land. With each other. With the
practices that unfold here. That ethos shapes everything, from the way guests are welcomed to the way the property is renewed and refreshed each year.
BlueGreen’s annual renewal has become part of its rhythm. Once a year, the team pauses operations and turns inward, refreshing the spaces with the same care and creativity that built them. This year’s additions include a new dining room anchored by a custom 20-seat table — a five metre slab milled from a tree felled during Cyclone Alfred — and a new ensuite bathroom featuring a sculptural copper bathtub. These details aren’t just decorative; they’re part of the Sanctuary’s story. The table especially has become a symbol of BlueGreen’s philosophy: transformation through honouring what the land offers.

Across the property, the facilities reflect the same intentionality. The yoga shala sits elevated among the trees, accessed by a rainforest boardwalk. The cold plunge and
infrared sauna sit on the wellness deck, surrounded by forest. The ceremonial tipi opens onto a fire pit used for evening circles and shared meals. The spa and treatment room hover above the lily pond. Three private dwellings — Villa, House and Loft — each with their own pool and quiet corners, accommodate up to eighteen guests. Every space feels connected to nature yet refined enough to meet the expectations of a luxury wellness destination.
BlueGreen’s design language is shaped by travels, textures and the broader world’s offerings, always with the intent to inspire. Nothing feels formulaic. Every detail, from the timber boardwalks to the meditation tipi, carries the imprint of human hands and thoughtful choices. It’s a place built with character and soul. Somewhere comfortable, inspiring and easy to live in. Manifesting this Sanctuary helped its owners heal; over time, they realised it had the capacity to do the same for others.
After two decades of hosting retreats for others, BlueGreen has entered a new chapter: offering their own. Trivium, their signature six day immersion, is the culmination of years of witnessing what truly supports personal transformation and represents BlueGreen stepping forward with its own voice — drawing on the success of hundreds of hosted retreats, the wisdom of world class facilitators, and the Sanctuary’s unique ability to hold people through deep work with a unique methodology.
Trivium is device free, nature led and intentionally immersive. It moves beyond the standard ‘rest and reset’ model, inviting guests into practices that expand presence, deepen insight and reconnect them with the land. It also ventures beyond the boundaries of BlueGreen itself, weaving in the region’s assets — ocean sunrises, hinterland hikes, waterfall walks and barefoot time on the land. In a wellness landscape crowded with offerings, Trivium stands apart for its depth, its structure and its commitment to meaningful change.

BlueGreen’s evolution into its own retreat offering also marks its arrival as a leader within the luxury wellness space. The sanctuary continues to grow year after year, not through expansion for expansion’s sake, but through thoughtful innovation. Each addition — from the new dining room to the copper bathed ensuite — is designed to elevate the guest experience while staying true to the property’s original spirit. It’s this blend of refinement, nature and intention that has positioned BlueGreen as a world class venue, drawing people from across Australia and around the globe.
Yet even with this evolution, BlueGreen remains what it has always been: a sanctuary built with care, held with heart, and shaped by a belief that healing happens through relationship. You see it when people arrive. And again, when they leave.
BlueGreen Sanctuary is more than a retreat venue. It is a homecoming.
