BYRON'S ICONIC HEART

If you’re a Northern Rivers local, or even a regular visitor to Byron Bay, chances are you’ve found yourself on the wraparound deck at Balcony Bar & Oyster Co. At this point, it’s less a recommendation and more a rite of passage.

Perfectly positioned just metres from Main Beach and elevated above the village bustle, Balcony is more than a restaurant. It is a Byron institution. Housed within one of the town’s last remaining heritage buildings, the 150-year-old former family home and boarding house has witnessed Byro

n’s whaling days, sand mining era and surf-town evolution. Once owned by the Bertoli family, who remain locals, the building still carries the spirit of a home designed to be shared.

That ethos endures. The spirit is intentionally welcoming and inclusive. Barefoot beachgoers arrive straight from the sand, while others settle in for long lunches, celebratory dinners or sunset cocktails. Ocean breezes drift through the wraparound balcony. Hinterland sunsets spill across timber floors. The mood is easy, the door is open, and the rhythm runs firmly on Byron time.

Carefree to the core, except when it comes to food and service. Here, there is real depth of care.

The menu is seafood-forward and coastal Mediterranean in spirit, grounded in fresh, locally sourced produce from the Northern Rivers and shaped by refined Italian technique. At its helm is Head Chef Stefano Farese, born near Milan and trained throughout Italy and Europe. Inspired by his Nonna, his mother, a professional chef, and culinary greats such as Massimo Bottura and Alain Ducasse, Stefano brings both heritage and heart to the plate.

Freshly shucked oysters are central to the experience, served natural or dressed with aguachile or yuzu, or baked with bagna cauda, a creamy anchovy and garlic emulsion. The Moreton Bay Bug Linguine has become a signature, while Tuna Carpaccio and the Hot Seafood Platter celebrate the region’s ocean bounty. Pasta is made in-house using imported Italian machinery and premium flour, a rare commitment in a coastal venue. Steaks are cooked to perfection alongside vibrant seasonal sides.

The drinks list is refreshingly local and thoughtfully curated. Seasonal cocktails, an extensive wine selection designed to pair beautifully with seafood and steak, and some of the region’s best craft beers ensure there is something for every palate. From Champagne and cured salmon to French fries and a chilled rosé at sunset, the offering is relaxed yet refined.

Beyond everyday dining, Balcony is home to one of Byron Bay’s only true private dining rooms, an intimate enclosed space for up to 20 guests. Ideal for pre- and post-wedding gatherings, milestone birthdays or elevated long-table celebrations, it reflects the generous spirit of the original home. Larger events can unfold across the Palms area or the entire venue, accommodating up to 200 guests with the guidance of an experienced events team.

Grounded in history yet evolving with the town, Balcony Bar & Oyster Co. remains quintessentially Byron Bay, capturing its relaxed confidence, understated refinement and free-spirited charm. Effortless, iconic and still setting the standard.
