I'LL HAVE MY REGULAR, THANKS

You know the feeling. You pop in on the way to work and before you’ve even reached the counter, you’ve been greeted with a smile, and your coffee is already on its way. It’s the charm of a great local cafe, where the staff know your name, remember your order, and make you feel like you’re part of the family.

They might not be the newest or the trending hotspots, but these are the legends that make a town feel like home. From a beachside favourite riding the swell of community spirit to a heritage post office that’s become the heartbeat of hinterland hospitality, they are our favourites for a reason — and it’s not just the good coffee. It’s the warmth, the food, and that rare, wonderful feeling that some things never get old.

Let’s show them some love. Grab your regulars’ card and get stamping.

Brew & Bake Co
Brew & Bake Co

BREW & BAKE CO. | KINGSCLIFF

Don’t let the compact footprint fool you, Brew & Bake Co. packs an extraordinary amount of heart into every square metre. On any given morning in Kingscliff, you’ll find locals spilling around after their ocean swims, dogs happily collecting their complimentary puppy biscuits, and a warm chorus of conversation that tells you everything about what kind of place this is.

The coffee is outstanding — sourced from local roasters who know their craft — while the food leans into comforting favourites done properly rather than overworked concepts. There’s a genuine commitment to supporting local businesses woven through everything here, from the suppliers they choose (including honey from their own local beehives) to the community they’ve built. The staff are a true standout: the kind of team that remembers your name, your order, and always makes you feel like the highlight of their morning. Petite in size, enormous in spirit, Brew & Bake Co. is exactly what a great local cafe should be.

Caba Social
Caba Social

CABA SOCIAL | CABARITA BEACH

Caba Social feels less like a cafe and more like the town’s unofficial living room. Tucked on the main street of Cabarita Beach, this family-owned favourite hums with a kind of easy, year-round energy that only comes from a place deeply embedded in its community. Much of the magic can be traced to Shanni, whose passion for food runs deep and whose commitment to sourcing the freshest seasonal produce shows up in every single dish. Everything here carries that handmade, nothing-is-rushed sensibility, from baked treats straight out of the oven to nourishing plates that change with the seasons.

Owners Liv and Andy have built more than a business; they’ve cultivated a team who are warm, efficient, and most importantly, happy to be there — and it’s a vibe that’s contagious. Open every day of the week and busy enough that booking ahead is a very good idea, Caba Social is the kind of place that earns fierce loyalty fast. Once it becomes your regular, it tends to stay that way.

NECTAR GENERAL STORE | CABARITA BEACH

Head to the other end of the Cabarita strip and you'll find this blush-toned, impossibly stylish beauty. Nectar General Store has that quintessential cool-coastal energy that Cabarita does better than almost anywhere — unhurried, sun-kissed, and just a little bit gorgeous. Walk in and you'll immediately want to live here: soft pink tiles, warm timber, shelves stacked with beautiful things, and a crowd that looks like they've just come in from the beach. Which let's be honest, they probably have.

But it's the food that keeps the locals coming back. House-baked banana bread and carrot cake, a signature açai blend, a smoothie menu worth working through, and sandwiches with a devoted following of their own. Coffee is Single O, crafted with care and full of character. Open daily from 6am, it's the kind of easy, feel-good local that slots perfectly into the morning routine.

Once you've found it, it's yours. Sign up to their loyalty points program and you'll have even more reason to return.

Combi

COMBI | BYRON BAY

If you've been to Byron and somehow missed Combi, it's time to put that right. As iconic to this town as the lighthouse on the hill, this much-loved local has been drawing in the faithful for years, and once you've been, you'll understand exactly why. Always buzzing with a happy hum, it has that easy, lived-in Byron energy that locals and visitors alike fall straight into. Regulars claim their usual table, first-timers make it a beeline, and somehow it works beautifully for both.

The staff are as warm as the welcoming vibes, and the food is fresh, wholesome, colourful and seriously good. It’s healthy eating that feels like a reward rather than a compromise. The pesto crumpets have their own devoted following: sourdough crumpets with house-made cashew cream, macadamia pesto, kale crumbs, poached eggs and vegan parmesan. Laidback, delicious, and completely Byron Bay. Combi isn't just a great cafe — it's a rite of passage.

Woods
Woods

WOODS | BANGALOW

Whenever the road leads to Bangalow, Woods is our first stop every time. In the vibing little arts precinct off Station Street, this community-focused cafe has built a following of devotee regulars who return not just for the coffee, but for food that genuinely surprises. Seasonal, locally focused, and completely its own thing, the menu takes familiar cafe fare and turns it into something you won’t find anywhere else. Case in point: the vegan and gluten-free banana bread, loaded with maple miso butter, baked blueberries, macadamia streusel and seasonal fruit. A show-off? Absolutely, and in all the best possible ways.

Walk-ins only keep things refreshingly unstructured, adding to the cafe’s relaxed, slightly hidden gem feel. Beyond the daily rush, the team also does catering and events if you want to take the whole experience home. Fresh, healthy, joyful food in a space that feels like it belongs entirely to the town. Exactly the kind of cafe this region does so well.

Buckley's Chance
Buckley's Chance

BUCKLEY'S CHANCE | ALSTONVILLE

If Alstonville isn't already on your radar, let this be your sign to take the scenic detour. Set within the town's beautifully restored historic post office, Buckley's Chance has earned its place as a genuine hinterland institution, and it's not hard to see why.

There's a steady, welcoming warmth here from the moment you walk in. Executive Chef Bret Cameron anchors a seasonal menu that runs from breakfast through lunch, seven days a week, showcasing the best of Northern Rivers produce without overcomplicating it. Coffee is Allpress — reliably excellent — and being fully licensed means you can linger for a long lunch, especially with a menu that delivers. The local fish dish and prawn pasta have earned rave reviews, and a well-edited cocktail list, Jilly wines and Yulli's beers make the perfect companions.

What makes Buckley's Chance stand out is its sense of ease. It's equally a morning coffee stop and a long, lazy lunch destination. Just a short drive from Byron Bay, Ballina and Lennox Head, it feels like a detour worth taking — not because it's trying to be a destination, but because it already is one.

Hemlocks
Hemlocks

HEMLOCKS | WOODBURN

If you’re on the way down south, consider this your permission to pull over. Just off the Pacific Highway in Woodburn, Hemlocks is the kind of coffee break that ends up being the highlight of your journey. Part specialty coffee house, part bookshop, it's a combination so good you wonder why everywhere doesn't do it — shelves laden with new and pre-loved titles, old leather chairs, comfy couches, and even a piano if the mood takes you. You may just never want to leave.

Born in 2023 in the wake of the Northern Rivers floods, Hemlocks was opened by Samuel Allis as a place to slow down, reconnect, and find comfort in a great cup and a good book. That spirit is still very much alive today. The coffee is roasted locally by Samuel's own Rainforest Roastery — ethically sourced and genuinely excellent — and whether you visit in person or discover them through their newly launched website, a coffee subscription means you can take a little piece of Hemlocks wherever the road leads.

Road trippers, caravaners and truckies are all welcome, with easy parking to match. Take note travellers, this one is sure to become your regular pit-stop for the soul.
