PERMISSION TO PAUSE

Can you feel it — the months beginning to gather speed? Spring is when we start craving a moment off the hamster wheel: a few days handed over to someone else's design, where the meals, the schedule and the small daily decisions are lifted from your plate.

Living in the heart of Australia’s wellness capital means the pause you have been craving is closer than you think. Across the region, retreat sanctuaries within easy reach offer their own version of stepping away, creating space to finally exhale.
More than a holiday, a wellness retreat can offer an energising and powerful pathway back to self. There are countless variations: some nourish; others focus on detox, movement, stillness or deep conversation. What they share is a container built for genuine restoration, the kind everyday life rarely makes room for.
Spring doesn’t have to be about bracing for the sprint to Christmas. It is the moment to unclench your jaw and relax your shoulders. Consider this your permission to pause.
GWINGANNA — THE RESET EXPERIENCE

High on a plateau in the Tallebudgera Valley, 160 hectares of hinterland fall away toward Moreton Bay and the Gold Coast skyline. Gwinganna, meaning ‘lookout’, is a fitting name for this remarkable place, home to one of Australia’s most awarded wellness retreats for twenty years.
The reset here begins with what you leave behind. No phones, no alcohol, no caffeine or substances past the front gate. This is a retreat built on real boundaries, giving the nervous system room to properly breathe. Days move through the Spa Sanctuary, an infinity pool with views clear to the coast, an Iyengar yoga studio, and Mountain Bathing, a newly launched practice of hammocks, birdsong and guided stillness across seven forest clearings.
Stay two nights for an introduction or seven for the full Detox, with specialty programs exploring a wide range of health and wellbeing topics, from stress and sleep to nutrition, women’s health and more. EcoTourism certified and regarded as one of the most innovative wellness destinations in Australasia, Gwinganna offers more choice than any other health retreat in the country. The organic wholefood kitchen, ancient trees and total quiet do the rest. Two decades on, Gwinganna still knows exactly what a reset is for.
LIONSGATE WELLNESS — THE PRIVATE EXPERIENCE

Tucked away on 102 private acres in the Byron Bay hinterland, Lionsgate Wellness offers an intimate, highly personalised escape designed entirely around the individual. There is no fixed program, timetable or shared schedule. Every private stay begins with a conversation about what a guest is seeking, whether it is deep rest, reconnection, clarity, support through transition or simply time alone. From there, the experience is curated from scratch.
Breathwork, sound healing, Yoga Nidra, meditation, massage, intuitive guidance and equine-assisted sessions can be woven together through a collective of highly regarded practitioners. The land is part of the experience too. River frontage along the Wilsons River, open hills, a 1.6-kilometre nature walk, a labyrinth and the property’s Grandmother Tree create a quiet, grounding environment where the nervous system can settle. Here, the pauses between sessions matter as much as the sessions themselves, offering space to integrate, breathe and return to self.
Private retreats sit at the heart of Lionsgate, but the gates also open for group immersions, leadership retreats and seasonal gatherings. Whatever shape the experience takes, the intention remains the same: meaningful change held with privacy, presence and care.
GYMEA — THE HOLDING EXPERIENCE

At the base of Wollumbin, where 46 hectares of rainforest rise inside the ancient volcanic caldera known as the Green Cauldron, Gymea Eco Retreat & Spa offers something rare in the wellness landscape: a retreat environment designed entirely around the work facilitators bring. This is a venue that doesn’t compete with the program — it holds it.
Twenty eco rooms sit quietly among the trees, alongside a commercial kitchen and dining hall, the Octagon event space, a 25-metre magnesium pool and a Healing Spa with massage, sauna, steam room and plunge pool. The land itself shapes the experience – rainforest trails, volcanic energy and the quiet rise of Wollumbin create a natural container for transformation.
Sustainability sits at the core of the property. Harvested rainwater, onsite solar, organic and biodynamic linen and full on-site composting have earned Gymea multiple environmental awards and reflect the ethos of the place.
The calendar shifts with the facilitators who book the space: fasting and detox programs, yoga and movement, meditation and breathwork, sound healing, silent retreats, women’s and men’s work, and professional development immersions. Whatever your entry point into rest or transformation, you’ll find it at Gymea.
ZEPHYR HORSES — THE CONNECTION EXPERIENCE
Just outside Byron Bay, Zephyr Horses offers a retreat experience where wellness

arrives through movement, rhythm and connection. This is equine‑led restoration — guests catch, brush, saddle and rug their own horse before riding through subtropical woodland or along open beach, finding presence in the steady cadence of hooves and the quiet partnership between rider and horse.

Retreats are designed for small groups and unfold over three days at Elements of Byron. Thursday afternoon opens with a riding assessment, followed by fine dining at Elements. Friday brings yoga and breakfast before a full‑day ride from forest to beach to pub, then an evening firepit and fine dining back at Elements. Saturday continues with yoga and breakfast, easing riders gently through the weekend. Spring adds its own kind of magic: as the whale migration passes this stretch of coast, riders often spot pods breaching just offshore mid‑ride.
For some, this is a more accessible entry point into wellness — a reset shaped by motion rather than stillness. Salt air, open space and the grounding presence of a horse beneath you. Connection, in its simplest form.
TRIVIUM — THE DEEP IMMERSION EXPERIENCE

Set in Byron’s lush hinterland, luxurious BlueGreen Sanctuary brings a revolutionary wellness experience: Trivium, a six‑day immersion shaped around three core principles — Nature, Body and Soul. Created as a reconnection to innate intelligence, Trivium restores balance and unlocks lasting personal transformation in an increasingly disconnected world. Phones are surrendered on arrival, opening a rare digital‑free space where guests can slow down, breathe deeply and begin the journey back inward.
Days unfold through yoga, Qi Gong, somatic dance, breathwork, hot and cold immersion and transpersonal art therapy, guided by Trivium’s experienced hosts and facilitators. Silence, inquiry, meditation and sound immersions create space for insight, while chef‑prepared plant‑based meals support the body as part of the process.

Drawing on the healing power of nature, embodied practices and neuroscience‑informed wellness principles, guests rise with the sun over the ocean, walk barefoot through ancient forests, sit beneath pristine waterfalls and move through tea ceremonies on the beach. Nature is not a backdrop; it is an active co‑facilitator, offering its own wisdom, rhythm and grounding.
BlueGreen’s grounds and luxurious accommodation elevate the experience. Three pools, an infrared sauna, ice bath, spa and architecturally designed residences create a refined, sensory environment that mirrors the retreat’s intention.
Six days, one meaningful shift. Trivium is a journey back to centre — where nature, body and soul align.
DESIGN YOUR OWN RETREAT
Not every escape needs a program. Sometimes the reset you’re craving is one you build yourself — a stay with the right bones already in place, where wellness is woven quietly through the experience and the only itinerary is the one you decide on over breakfast.
After exploring the region’s dedicated retreat sanctuaries, these escapes are for those who would rather curate their own version of stepping away. However you choose to pause, there’s a retreat made for you.

TAMBORINE MOUNTAIN GLADES — THE SIGNATURE EXPERIENCE
Launching this spring in collaboration with Tamborine Mountain’s SOL Elements bathhouse, the new Signature Spring Escape at Tamborine Mountain Glades is built for exactly this kind of self-directed pause. It’s a complete 48-hour departure — two nights on the mountain for two — with just enough structure to make switching off effortless, and just enough freedom left over to shape the days however you please.

Tamborine Mountain has always made unhurried escapes easy. Close enough to the coast for a spontaneous weekend, it offers hinterland air that begins the work of slowing down before you’ve even checked in. The package folds in a SOL Elements bathhouse session — hot and cold immersion that would usually require a separate booking — alongside a wine or beer tasting at Witches Falls Winery, adding a slower, more social kind of unwinding. A dining voucher lets you follow your appetite rather than a schedule; a bottle of wine waits back in the room for whenever it’s wanted, and a Pedley Picnic experience sets up an afternoon outdoors, rug down, views uninterrupted.
It’s an escape that hands guests the ingredients — soak, sip, eat, wander — and lets them decide what order restoration comes in.
MERCURE GOLD COAST RESORT — THE RESTORATIVE EXPERIENCE

The Privilege Room at Mercure Gold Coast Resort is the resort’s answer to wellness without the itinerary — a stay that folds spa-grade indulgence into the everyday rhythm of a hotel visit rather than asking guests to step outside it for a program or treatment booking. It’s designed for travellers who want the feeling of a retreat without the structure of one.
Each Privilege Room comes with a king bed or two queens, robes and slippers waiting on arrival, an L’OR coffee machine for slow mornings and an in-room spa bath for slower evenings. The aromatherapy suite, curated with local company Urban Sun, turns the room into a small sanctuary: ceramic diffuser, face mist, room spray, bath salts and a shower steamer. Even the minibar stays on theme, stocked with BSKT Wholefood vegan chocolate, zero-alcohol beer and better-for-you snacks.
Step outside and the resort continues the work. Two pools — including a magnesium pool for mineral-rich soaking — landscaped gardens for wandering, a Lakeside Lawn for picnics, and courts for tennis, pickleball, futsal and basketball, offer movement or stillness depending on the mood. Seasonal, plantforward menus at The Green Dining and The Cart bring wellness to the plate, with produce grown on site.
Nothing here requires a booking beyond the room itself. The easiest kind of self-designed retreat there is.
QT GOLD COAST — THE INDULGENCE EXPERIENCE
Wellness at QT Gold Coast skips the program and goes straight to indulgence. Check into a qtQT Cabin, tucked quietly into the middle of Surfers Paradise, and the plan is simple: sleep in, switch off, leave the Do Not Disturb sign up as long as you like. It’s a private pocket designed for slow starts, long stretches of lounging and weekends where time feels elastic.

When you’re ready, spaQ takes over. Phones are left behind, notifications silenced, and the therapists handle the rest. The treatment menu is built around flexibility — a choose-your-own-rest approach shaped by how you feel on the day. Whether it’s a facial, a massage or a long, unhurried soak, each treatment is designed to deliver real therapeutic impact while keeping the experience grounded in pleasure. It’s wellness that meets you where you are, not where a schedule says you should be.
From there, afternoons unfold gently: leisurely swims, long lunches taken in poolside cabanas, an unhurried beach walk that eases you into dinner. QT’s take on wellness isn’t about routine or restriction; it’s about giving guests exactly what they need, exactly when they need it. A little rest. A little indulgence. A lot of feeling good.
This is wellness, your way. Luxury included.
