THRIFTING BEAUTY

  • 3 min read

There’s something deeply satisfying about shopping preloved. The slower pace, the thrill of the find, the magic of pieces that carry stories from one wearer to the next.

written By Donna Rishton-Potter

Inspired by Maddy Swain’s slow-fashion philosophy, this edit invites a rethink of how we shop. From wonderfully worn garments to soulful objects waiting for their next chapter, buying secondhand brings circularity into the equation and restores meaning to our wardrobes. It’s sustainable, yes, but it’s also joyful and communal, grounded in the simple pleasure of uncovering something beautiful that already exists.

Once you start dressing with intention, thrifting becomes less about buying and more about care, creativity and individuality. From Maddy’s go-to spots to our own favourite finds up and down the coast, this is a reminder that fashion with personality and purpose is already out there — you just have to know where to look.

MADDY’S PICKS

Packed with personality and hidden treasures, these are Maddy Swain’s Tweed Heads favourites:

Strange Days Store — Tweed Heads

Cult, curated and unmistakably itself, Strange Days is less a shop and more a mood. Specialising in authentic American and European vintage, with a strong lean towards Western wear, rock’n’roll energy and lived-in leather, this Bay Street favourite feels like a museum-meets-boutique. Pieces are chosen for history, wear and soul, not polish. Preloved at its most expressive.

Studio Rodeo — Tweed Heads

A curated pre-loved and vintage concept store specialising in women’s and men’s pieces from the ’90s and early 2000s, with small weekly drops sourced exclusively from NSW and Queensland. Thoughtfully curated by owner Kate, Studio Rodeo delivers nostalgia, edge and individuality in equal measure.

Momentum Collective Australia — Tweed Heads

Part op shop, part community hub, Momentum Collective offers a refreshingly purpose-led take on second-hand retail. Operated by a team of supported employees, the space champions inclusivity while offering a broad and ever-changing mix of clothing, furniture, homewares and bric-a-brac. Every purchase supports meaningful employment and keeps quality items in circulation.

WHERE EVERYTHING OLD IS NEW AGAIN

From vintage specialists to modern consignment and classic community-run op shops, these stores round out the region’s second-hand landscape. Some places reward a quick browse; others invite a slow dig. All offer an alternative to fast fashion and the chance to uncover something with soul.
